After being switched on for most of the last seven years, I think my old computer has most definitely had it! New one arrives tomorrow... BTW - anyone in the UK looking to buy a new computer, it might be worth checking out dabs.com; they're selling a 2.26GHz Celeron base unit with SUSE quite cheaply at the moment... It fails, apparently because the cAos-2 gtk2 RPMs are named "gtk" rather than gtk2: $ rpm -q gtk gtk-2.4.13-1.caos whereas in the FC4 tree, the current gtk2 RPM is: gtk2-2.6.7-4.i386.rpm (Note the "gtk" vs. "gtk2") I installed anyway using "--nodeps", and now in the application the menus all flicker horribly. Anyone else seen this behavior? Is there a better way to fix the gtk2/gtk naming issue, rather than using --nodeps? (I believe there was also a dependency for an older libstdc++, which I satisfied by installing compat-libstdc++..or maybe i'm thinking of firefox 1.5) thanks slaton From mej at caosity.org Thu Jan 19 13:57:56 2006 From: mej at caosity.org (Michael Jennings) Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 16:57:56 -0500 Subject: [cAos] gtk/gtk2 rpm issue w/ 3rd party app In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20060119215756.GD28448@kainx.org> On Thursday, 19 January 2006, at 13:51:09 (-0800), slaton wrote: > I'm trying to install an rpm (acrobat) that has a gtk2 >= 2.4.0 > dependency. So far, I've come across quite a few in the -devel section, but I'm gonna have to look at that seperately... I'm building a client machine and when I have a client machine I like to have as few servers as possible. The following bugged me :- bind-utils requires bind - i.e. nslookup requires a full named - is this really the case? gnome-vfs-extras requires samba - i.e. it requires the server component installed locally? nautilus requires gnome-vfs-extras - so... to have a working gnome, you have to have samba server installed? seems a pretty large imaginative jump to do that. Also, I'm looking at wine again... winehq now give src rpms, which is useful, but wine requires a file from xorg-x11-devel NOT to be installed... is there a BuildConflicts: tag? It's even worse because I'm sure wine should require SDL-devel and that depends on xorg-x11-devel... that's a bit circular. The problems are twofold - bandwidth and load here. The cAos Foundation (www.caosity.org) currently has a machine being hosted at OSUOSL, and we are willing to provide whatever assistance we can to the E project via that server and our other servers hosted elsewhere. We have multiple systems we can bring to bear on the problem and can provide rrDNS load balancing services to help share the burden. While we already support working Enlightenment installs out-of-the-box, we are currently moving toward using E 0.17 as our default desktop, and thanks to some excellent theming work from LinuXY and titansoccer15, we will have a customized default theme in the very near future. We are happy to provide whatever services we can to assist the project on a temporary or permanent basis, either in the interim while you gather resources for your own server, or for as long as you see fit. We are a non-profit corporation and have resources of our own for obtaining and deploying hosting, hardware, etc. which are at your disposal. Michael -- Michael Jennings (a.k.a. I haven't looked at these specifically, but the first thing to do would be to file bugs for each one in the bug tracker. Then the developers can determine whether each one is necessary or not.
