I have 3 questions: 1. Installation of cAos on an HP DL 360 (scsi-based system) doesn't seem to find the scsi controller and disk. Is there some magic command I can issue during install to fix this? 2. I have installed the core file system and would like to install and configure an x-server. I tried rebooting to the CD and choosing Option 4 (sidekick), but apparently I have to start with option 1 and proceed with each option before attempting the next option. I just need to install a windowing system - but have no desire to go through the entire install process again. Suggestions? 3. Installation of the core file system didn't seem to install an SSH daemon. Once Sidekick works for me, will I have the option of installing SSH without getting stuck in RPM hell? Note, I'm not linux-savvy, so perhaps you can dumb-down your answers for me! Thanks, P. ----- End forwarded message ----- -- Michael Jennings (a.k.a. RPM hell is managed very nicely by yum. ;) You can use sidekick to select package groups for installation, or you can install by hand: # yum grouplist (shows you the list of groups that are installed and available) # yum groupinstall network base x desktop gnome gnome_extras (will install basic unix/linux utilities, network tools (including ssh) and a base gnome desktop system) BTW, please email the email list directly for questions (caos at caosity.org). I have some progress to report. I've forgotten about the SCSI issue for now. I booted into the system and ran sidekick (which is very nice, btw). The system has been updated and I attempted to install some packages. Things appeared to be moving along swimmingly, until: "Error: missing dependency: openssh = 3.8.1pl-8.caos is needed by package openssh-server" and Error: missing dependency: cups-libs = 1.1.20 is needed by package cups" I did install the packages you suggested. I was expecting that after installation (and even after a reboot), I should be able to type 'startx' and see the desktop environment. I must be missing yet another step... On another note: after installing the core system for the first time, the network wasn't working or configured. I created by hand /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/sysconfig/network and populated both files as necessary. Rebooted. Only then did I have network access. If all works well, we can import into caos2. The process is to first install the devel package group, and then compile the src.rpm. Here is the idea: get package.src.rpm # yum groupinstall devel $ mzbuild package.src.rpm (potentially yum install any missing deps if build fails) # rpm -Uvh package.arch.rpm note: mzbuild is a wrapper for rpmbuild. The idea is simple (and docs hopefully coming soon). You can download our entire CVS repository for the distribution, and then use either mzbuild (as used above) to build directly from the CVS tree, or use buildtool to build them all at once in parallel. We still need to migrate our anoncvs box to make this possible, but the process is actually very easy. ;) Check out some of the mezz docs in our wiki at: https://wiki.caosity.org/tiki-index.php?page=Package+Maintenance&bl -- Greg M.
